Precision Kovar Machining for High-Tech Equipment

Kovar® is an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy engineered for one signature property: its thermal expansion matches borosilicate glass — which is why it is the material of choice for glass-to-metal seals in optical, electronic and vacuum packages. Machining it well starts with chemistry you can trust.

Why ProtoTech

Why equipment manufacturers choose us

Chemistry verified at the door

Kovar's expansion behavior depends on its Ni/Co balance. Every incoming batch is checked on our benchtop spectrometer against the specified grade — before it touches a machine.

Tight tolerance on a demanding alloy

±0.005 mm typical where applicable, surface finish down to Ra 0.2 µm — with tooling and parameters matched to tough, work-hardening Fe-Ni-Co.

Documentation for regulated builds

EN 10204 3.1 certificates, batch traceability and Zeiss CMM dimensional reports — standard, not extras.

How we work

From Drawing to Delivered Part

A transparent, engineering-led process built for long-term supply programs — not one-off transactions.

1

Submit & Review

Send drawings and program context. Our engineers run a DFM review and flag tolerances, materials and risk before any cutting begins.

2

Quote & Material Plan

You receive a transparent quote plus a material-verification plan — grade, EN/DIN check and certificate strategy for your application.

3

Machine & Inspect

In-house precision machining, then Zeiss CMM dimensional inspection and spectrometer material verification on critical batches.

4

Deliver & Support

Kitted, ESD-safe or cleanroom packaging, with local engineering and after-sales support through our German partner.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Glass-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal seals, hermetic packages for optics, sensors and vacuum electronics — anywhere the metal must expand and contract with glass without cracking the seal.
The alloy's thermal expansion — its whole reason for existing — depends on a precise nickel/cobalt balance. We verify incoming stock on a spectrometer against the specified grade, so the certificate matches the metal in your part.
Yes — ±0.005 mm typical where applicable, verified on our Zeiss CMM. Kovar machines predictably like other tough Fe-Ni alloys when tooling and parameters are managed correctly.

What happens after you send your files

  • Within 1 business day an engineer — not a salesperson — reviews your drawings and replies.
  • DFM review: tolerances, material and risk flags, before any cutting begins.
  • Your quote includes a material-verification plan: grade, EN/DIN check, certificate strategy.

Every critical dimension is verified on our in-house Zeiss CMM · material chemistry confirmed by spectrometer · EN 10204 3.1 certificates available.
