CNC Machining for Optical & Photonics Equipment
Optical and photonics systems demand dimensional and thermal stability: a few microns of drift or a poorly finished bore can move a beam off target. ProtoTech works with optical instrument makers, laser system builders and photonics device manufacturers who need mechanically precise, thermally stable and cleanly finished parts.
We machine the structural and alignment parts inside your systems: lens barrels, mirror and optic mounts, optical housings, laser module bodies and alignment structures — in aluminium (dimensionally stable), titanium, low-thermal-expansion alloys and engineering plastics.

Optical & Photonics Components We Machine
We work from the perspective of the parts inside your equipment — not from a machine-count brochure.
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
| Lens Barrels | Barrel bodies, retaining rings, cell holders |
| Mirror & Optic Mounts | Kinematic mounts, mirror seats, adjustment brackets |
| Optical Housings | Detector and sensor housings, enclosures |
| Laser Module Bodies | Laser heads, beam-path structures |
| Alignment Structures | Stages, rails, reference plates |
| Optical Assemblies | Multi-part sub-assemblies with alignment tolerances |

Materials for Optical & Photonics
Thermal stability and surface finish drive performance. ProtoTech machines:
- Aluminium — stable, lightweight optical structures (controlled finishing)
- Titanium — high stiffness-to-weight optical frames
- Special Alloys — low-thermal-expansion metals for reference structures
- Engineering Plastics — PEEK, PTFE for insulation and damping

Capabilities for Precision Optical Parts
- 5-Axis Machining — complex monolithic optical bodies in one setup → 5-Axis Machining
- Precision CNC Turning — barrels, rings, threaded cells → CNC Turning
- Swiss Machining — small-diameter precision parts → Swiss Machining
- Tight Tolerance Machining — repeatable ±0.005 mm class → Tight Tolerance
Quality, Inspection and Traceability
In optical systems, an out-of-tolerance bore or finish defect is a beam error. ProtoTech provides dimensional inspection, inspection reports, material certification and full traceability — so your quality team can qualify us for recurring production with confidence.
Our in-house metrology includes a Zeiss coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for full dimensional inspection and First Article Inspection (FAI), plus a benchtop material spectrometer to verify incoming stock against the specified grade. Every shipment can be supplied with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates and lot-level traceability, backed by ISO 9001:2015 (AENOR).
From Prototype to Recurring Production
We support the full lifecycle of your optical program:
- Prototype — first articles and design validation
- Pre-Series — small batches before ramp-up
- Recurring Production — scheduled supply of multiple part numbers
- Series Production — volume supply with stable lead times
