Swiss vs Conventional Turning
On a Swiss-type lathe the bar stock is supported close to the cut by a guide bushing, so even very long, thin parts stay stable. This gives exceptional diameter control and surface finish on small parts with high length-to-diameter ratios — parts that would chatter or deflect on a conventional lathe.
