What 5-Axis Machining Delivers
With two rotational axes in addition to the three linear axes, a 5-axis machine can reach five faces of a part without unclamping. For equipment manufacturers this means tighter positional accuracy between features, fewer setups (and fewer cumulative errors), and the ability to machine compound angles and freeform surfaces that are impossible or slow on a 3-axis centre.
Our 5-axis capability is part of a single workflow with milling, turning and inspection — so your complex part is machined and verified under one roof. CNC Machining · Tight Tolerance
Parts Suited to 5-Axis
| Part class | Why 5-axis |
|---|---|
| Monolithic housings & manifolds | Deep cavities and side features in one clamp |
| Impellers & turbine-like parts | Freeform surfaces, compound angles |
| Optical & sensor bodies | Tight inter-feature position tolerances |
| Angled bolt patterns & bosses | No re-fixturing, no cosine error |
| Complex brackets | Reduced setups, better repeatability |
Benefits
- Accuracy — features held relative to each other without re-clamping
- Speed — fewer setups, shorter total lead time
- Geometry — undercuts, compound angles and contoured surfaces
- Finish — better tool engagement and surface quality
Typical Materials
Aluminium and stainless for structures, titanium for strength-to-weight, and engineering plastics such as PEEK for chemically stable or insulating parts. Special Alloys such as Kovar are also machined on 5-axis where low-expansion parts are required.
Quality, Inspection & Traceability
For equipment manufacturers, one failed component can stop a production line or compromise a field product. ProtoTech provides dimensional inspection, inspection reports, material certification and full traceability — so your quality team can qualify us for recurring production with confidence.
Our in-house metrology includes a Zeiss coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for full dimensional inspection and First Article Inspection (FAI), plus a benchtop material spectrometer that verifies incoming stock against the specified grade. Every shipment can be supplied with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates and lot-level traceability, backed by ISO 9001:2015 (AENOR).
